We all know how important learning is, that is why we are teachers. These summer months are the best time to be a learner yourself. Use the three months to grow and learn. Explore and read, study and grow. Make these months count. Here are some different ways that you can be an excellent learner during the summer.
First, pick one or two books (maybe even more if you are a fast reader) that you will read to learn from this summer. They might be on a topic that will help with classroom management or relating to your students. The books may be biographies or books about great historical moments. You may even decide to read a mix of different books. My suggestion is to read books that appeal to you and things that you want to learn more about.
Next, look through all the various professional development options that are being offered and try to get the year’s requirements completed this summer. There are so many places that offer free or inexpensive classes that will allow you to get your yearly required hours during these months. There is even the benefit of more being online and virtual than ever before, thanks to the disease that must not be named. Choose a few to grow and learn from.
Finally, use this time to travel to a national or state park and learn from enjoying nature. Most of these places have great learning programs and materials that will enrich your knowledge, and give you things to enrich your students with when we all return in the fall. These are great activities to do with family and friends. That way you can build those relationships and also continue learning.
I know summer is a break, and as teachers we really do need rest and relaxation. I have just found that this is also a great time to learn and grow.
